SSE Airtricity is Ireland’s largest provider of 100% green energy and is a client focused on bringing its message of green power to Ireland. To help spread the generation green message SSE Airtricity partnered with National Geographic and Sick of Plastic in Dublin to run a Pop-up exhibition, hosted by Friends of the Earth and VOICE Ireland. As part of the lead up to COP 26 – the UN’s Climate change conference. The plan for Ripple was to help create an outdoor gallery made entirely out of sustainable materials to help showcase the National Geographic exhibition. Launching in Belfast on the iconic maritime mile- onwards to Ireland’s capital at two seafront locations at the Dun Laoghaire Harbour and Skerries Promenade.
To stay true to the cause the Ripple team knew that no plastic of any sort could be used in this exhibition. This campaign challenged us to think about our own use of plastic as an agency. Brainstorming with the branding and installation team we set out how to create a fully sustainable exhibition- that could withstand strong coastal winds and rain whilst also being visually impactful.
This exhibition required durable materials and we chose birch plywood panels as the basefor this sustainable exhibition. Birch happens to be very fast-growing and abundant and there are plenty of well-managed, certified plantations that protect biodiversity and sustainability while the trees are growing and being harvested. The images of the exhibition itself were the next challenge – we chose UV printing to avoid plastic, vinyl and many other go-to materials. To top it all off – each panel was then sprayed with an anti-graffiti spray to help protect it from vandalism.
The Sick of Plastic exhibition is focused on the collaboration of various organisations to help raise awareness of the wasteful nature of the overproduction of plastic. We as a team had to think about sustainability first when helping to design the construction of this exhibition and are delighted in the role Ripple played in this event. We were also given the rare opportunity to collaborate with our clients during this time – working with Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and Fingal County Council to help bring Sick of Plastic’s exhibition to the widest possible audience.
